

Metaverses are networks of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection, online spaces that allow people to interact in a more immersive way than a traditional website. A metaverse is a universe that transcends beyond our tangible reality and simulates what we are otherwise too lazy to experience or can’t experience altogether (looking at you COVID-19). The term itself has its origins in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash as a portmanteau of "meta" and "universe" and society has actually been playing with the concept for some time already. The first point to address and one that causes a great deal of confusion to newcomers to the topic is that the Metaverse is anything but a new idea, let alone a product of Zuckerberg and his team. What exactly is the Metaverse? Is this the next technological revolution or is Meta selling a dream to investors? Let’s go step by step. The near one hour-long video raised more questions than answers for the average Joe detached from the tech-rabbit hole that blockchain, crypto and AI in general are today. Such a radical change for a seemingly robust and well-established company looked like an odd but promising decision.
